How to Grow Your Instagram Followers

As far as social media platforms go, Instagram is my favorite. Scrolling through my feed is one of my favorite parts of the day.

Being active on Instagram can be a great way to promote your blog or business. However, it can be hard to motivate yourself to create killer Instagram content for only 12 followers (4 of which you are pretty sure are spam accounts).

The good news is with a few simple tweaks to your Instagram strategy, you can easily start growing your Instagram account ASAP.

5 Ways to Grow Your Instagram Following

1 | Make Sure Your Account is Public

I thought this was obvious, but I’ve had multiple people ask me to conduct Instagram audits for them who had their accounts set to private.

People aren’t going to follow you without seeing what kind of content you are sharing first. Potential followers need to feel like following your Instagram account will provide some sort of value – be that entertainment or education.

So, if you have your account set as private go change it to public right now.

If you are worried about privacy and security, have a private personal account and a public facing business account.

2 | Optimize Your Bio

Other than hashtags, there are only two places that gets searched in Instagram – and those are your name and username. So be sure to add a few related keywords into your name field.

Add related keywords to your profile so you will turn up in search results.

For example:If you are a realtor, for your name: John Smith, Cincinnati Realtor
If you are a fashion blogger: Amy Jones, Fashion Tips

3 | Like and Comment on Targeted Photos

Liking and commenting on the photos of people in your target market sometimes gets criticized as spammy – but here’s the deal. It works!

So your task is to like and comment on the photos of people a genuine and engaging way.

One method is to search a hashtag used by your target market and like/comment on those photos.

Another method suggests going to the most recent photo of one of your competitors and liking and commenting on the photos of the people who engaged with that photo.

Spend some time trying out these two methods to discover what is more effective for you.

Liking and commenting on photos takes time, but if you truly want to grow your Instagram following, it will pay off.

Commit to spending a few minutes 3-4 times per day and you are guaranteed to see an increase in your followers.

4 | Use 30 Hashtags

Some Instagram marketers suggest only using a few hashtags in posts.

But you get 30 hashtags per post – so why not sure them all? Take advantage of every opportunity you have to be discovered.

Here’s the trick: put your hashtags in the first comment instead of your photo caption. That way, the comment containing the hashtags will be hidden as comments on your post start to roll in. Using this technique and you still get all the search juice without the spam look.

5 | Add Your Location

Adding a geotag to your Instagram photos is another way potential followers can find you. Take advantage of this feature and add the location.

For example, photographer who takes senior photos would add local high schools and photo shoot locations to photos.

Using these 5 tips, you will grow your Instagram following in no time.
